We checked in with one of our current Fall Semester students, Jordan, exactly one month into her study abroad program in Costa Rica.
Name: Jordan
Hometown: Rochester Hills, MI
University: Kalamazoo College
Major: Biology and Spanish
Graduation Year: 2021
ICDS Program: Fall 2019, Sustainable Development & Social Justice in Latin America
What made you choose Costa Rica for study abroad?
The chance to immerse myself in a Spanish-speaking country, the service learning component, and the perfect timing of the program that allows me to be back at Kalamazoo in time for my lacrosse season.
Have you traveled abroad before? If so, where?
No, I had never traveled abroad before this.
What was your first month in Costa Rica like?
This first month in Costa Rica has been eye-opening and unforgettable. The food here is incredible! I haven’t tried anything that I haven’t liked. I’ve been able to travel to multiple beaches so far and a national park that was absolutely beautiful.
How is studying abroad in Costa Rica pushing you outside of your comfort zone?
I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone since getting off the plane here, but in the best way possible. I’ve had to meet, work with, and live with all new people, and all in a different language, but it has benefited me as a Spanish-speaker and as a person.
What’s your favorite class so far? Why?
My favorite class is probably Development in Latin America from a Gender Perspective because even though it has been the most work, I love the professor and I have never taken a class on this topic before so it’s all new and really interesting.
What advice would you give someone thinking about studying abroad in Costa Rica?
I would first off advise to 100% do it. Second, I would let them know that you get the best of everything in Costa Rica. There’s a little bit of every kind of weather, lots of different kinds of food, and all kinds of sights to see from beaches, to farms, to volcanoes. You’ve got to learn to be prepared for anything, but you’ll learn to love it. Pura Vida.
Any recommendations for future ICDS students?
I would definitely recommend the Manuel Antonio National Park for a weekend trip, and also Feria Verde which is an amazing local farmer’s market every Saturday in Aranjuez.
BONUS QUESTION: What is one thing you wish you had packed?
My GoPro so I could capture more of every adventure here in Costa Rica!
